PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION


The Senior Communications Specialist is responsible for the development and implementation of sound communications plans and strategies to effectively position the company positively with the media,  customers and other key external stakeholders including elected officials and community entities. The Specialist works with Pepco business units, including key leadership, to develop and coordinate the positioning of strategic content to enhance corporate brand and identity. Responsibilities include development and implementation of communications tactics such as news releases and media pitches, key messages and talking points, newsletters and collateral materials geared to customers, event coordination, and interaction with and oversight of vendors. This position reports to the Communications Manager.


PRIMARY DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES 


1. Manage the company’s reputation through effective communication of company goals and initiatives to a variety of key stakeholders.


2. Act as company spokesperson


3. Develop and execute communications strategies and programs. 


4.  Serve as a strategic partner to business units on issues and programs related to the company’s reputation.


5. Develop and maintain a strong working relationship with business unit peers, company leadership and external stakeholders including the media and civic and community leaders.


6. Respond to media as needed and during crisis events i.e. outages, support of key venue activations 


7. Advise senior leadership on verbal and written responses to the media


8. Coordinate media relations needs (on camera interviews, background support, and interview coordination with senior leaders)

9. Support Atlantic City Electric and Delmarva Power with media relations efforts and communications planning, as needed

 

 

POSITION SPECIFICATIONS


·        4-year relevant degree and a minimum of 5 to 8 years’ experience in communications (media/public relations, employee communications or advertising.


·        Masters degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Advertising, or related field preferred. 


·        Proven, excellent communications skills – both written and interpersonal.


·        Strong analytical skills.


·        Excellent organizational and presentation skills.


·        Proven ability to be innovative and creative.


·        Ability to work autonomously and interface easily with senior business leaders and the local press.


·        Energy business/industry knowledge preferred.


Qualifications

- Directly supports the Manager, Communications, or Director, Communications, as needed.
- Position activities are focused on internal and external communications to employees and external stakeholders, which support initiatives and projects developed by corporate communications and business unit organizations for broader application.
- Requires significant outreach to internal and external audiences and development of strong relationships
- Involves proactive communication planning and plan execution, project leadership and a high level of coordination with other communication functions within Corporate.
- Requires ability to develop communications strategies
- Requires ability to travel 
- Flexibility to be on-call to deal with urgent media inquiries during evenings or weekends
- Works under minimal supervision.
